Social Loafing A major component of Social Psychological research is based on social loafing. Social loafing can result in diverse possibilities and also not only affects the individual who is conducting the social phenomenon but also group members are subjected to exposure. Discussion regarding the reasons of social loafing as an occurrence will be based primarily on evidence from literature regarding the specific component, envy. Envy can be provoked numerous ways but social comparison is essentially the prompt for this incidence. The phenomenon of envy is usually due to the resentment of personal qualities in correspondence to the Cinderella myth (Ulanov Ulanov, 1983. As cited in Duffy Shaw, 2000). Acknowledgement of superior achievements of a work colleague could merely be adequate to trigger the reaction of envy (Tesser Campbell, 1990. As cited in Duffy Shaw). As could the recognition of lack of sporting abilities compared to other team members be enough to influence or generate this reaction. Traditional workplace settings are believed to be the ideal location for envy to arise due to the tendency for individuals to work closely together (Vecchio, (1995). As cited in Duffy Shaw, (2000). Canterbury Tales Essay - Marriage and the Role of Women...
Marriage and the Role of Women in the Wife of Bathââ¬â¢s Prologue The Canterbury Tales, begun in 1387 by Geoffrey Chaucer, are written in heroic couplets iambic pentameters, and consist of a series of twenty-four linked tales told by a group of superbly characterized pilgrims ranging from Knight to Plowman. The characters meet at an Inn, in London, before journeying to the shrine of St Thomas a Becket at Canterbury. The Wife of Bath is one of these characters. She bases both her tale and her prologue on marriage and brings humor and intrigue to the tales, as she is lively and very often crudely spoken. Her role as a dominant female contrasts greatly with the others in the tales, like the prim and proper Prioress represents theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The wife is also able to dominate her husbands by other methods, which she often recommends to other wys wyfs. Here Chaucer is obviously appealing to his audience as there are no other wives on the pilgrimage but also the Wife may be suggesting that is not only her who acts in this manner therefo re condoning it. She firstly accuses them of indecent behavior thus covering her own faults and then reverts back to nagging. Her ability to nag and argue is complemented by her knowledge of many parables, fables and even astrology and she uses this to get the upper hand on her husbands but is defeated by Jankin as a scholar at Oxford, which demonstrates the repression of women through lack of education. Wealth and property feature heavily in the wifeââ¬â¢s portrayal of marriage and along with the issue of her independence is responsible for many of her marital conflicts. The first three husbands riche and olde were married each for hir land and hir tresoor then discarded as the Wife looks for other prospects. When one of these husbands tries to restrict the Wifeââ¬â¢s spending she refuses to let him be both maister of my body and of my good so refuses sexual favours in return for her freedom as she will not become a mere possession. Idea paper Pre-thesis proposal Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Idea paper Pre-thesis proposal - Essay Example For example, in a study conducted by April Saathoff, she mentioned that some physicians find the system too difficult to use, while others find it demeaning to enter orders in the system, a job typically allotted to ancillary staff (Saathoff, 2010, p.72). Recent research highlights the benefits that CPOE offers and reiterates that health care organizations must utilize information systems in order to ensure sustainability and continued development. There is a recent consensus on the capability of CPOE to reduce common order errors, but many professionals say that it is not the cure-all solution to all the ills of the health care system. To ensure the success of CPOE implementation, three things must be done: ââ¬Å"(a) [ensure] culture change that allows for risk-free reporting of errors by employees, (b) the use of technology and CPOE systems, and (c) smaller incremental changes [which could potentially affect physician efficiency]â⬠(Sengstack & Gugert, 2005, p.39). When creating an implementation plan, administrators must consider not only the technical requirements of implementation, but also a factor in physician acceptance of the system. If concerned health care personnel do not use the system, then there is no use to impl ement it. It is important for administrators to create a plan assuring cultural change so that health care professionals will gain motivation in learning the CPOE system and utilizing its features to ensure improved service delivery. The purpose of this study is to understand how the hospitals managed change and ensured that physicians will participate in the use of the CPOE system. Through this study, other health care organizations can gain insights on how they can deal with physician resistance as well as gather insights on the best practices in change management. Its main research question is ââ¬Å"How can health care organizations ensure strong physician participation in CPOE

Over Representation of African American Students in the Special Education System. Essay Example for Free
Over Representation of African American Students in the Special Education System. Essay Introduction My current school has special education roster of 32 students in self contain with over 90% of the students being African-American. This paper will address the large number African-American students in the special education system. Attention will be focus on the social economic roles that play a part in placement. When done properly and in appropriate perspective, special education is beneficial for students with a real disability, but special education services are inappropriate when a student receives it when it is not needed. African-American students are being placed in the special education system at an alarming rate. They are being labeled with disabilities at ages as early as five years old, because they progress slower than the rest of the class, bias in assessment instrument, discrimination in society reflected in the school or they may present some behavior issue. Special education is appropriate placement for students with real disabilities, but minority blacks are being disproportionately place in special education. This unjust placement at early ages are causing these children to be stereotyped as slow learners causing low self esteem and low achievement rate during and after school. This is a major problem when addressing special education for African Americans. Many attempts have been made to solve the issues but there have been no satisfactory results. Theoretical Framework The disproportionate representation of African-Americans students in the special education system is well documented. This misrepresentation has been problematic since the inception of the special education program. This paper will probe the reasons many of these students have been categorized with various type of learning disabilities or emotional disturbances. These labels given to students have proven to be life altering to students given incorrect placement. Lawsuits have been filed charging that placements of high numbers of African American, especially male, in special education classes has been a tool for resisting court ordered desegregation (Harry and Anderson, 1992). In many instances there is a lack of or unwillingness to properly place African American students because of educators in some systems being culturally diverse. Secondly there is a lot of mistrust between educators and parents. Many parents donââ¬â¢t seek appropriate services or disagree with educational placement because they feel they will be see as ignorant or ââ¬Å"talked downâ⬠to by teachers and administrators placing their children in special education. This paper will also discuss the long term effects that hinder students educational progress as well as there adult life. Once placed in many special education programs student may not be in line to receive a high school diploma. Many students have difficulties in the community getting jobs because employers feel they will be slower then there counterparts that received a regular education. This then snowballs into the child being placed in a lower social economic bracket because of the type of employment they will have to settle for in adulthood. African-American students are disproportionally placed in the special education system around the country. This misrepresentation is may be due to teacher ineffectiveness. Improving teachersââ¬â¢ capacity to provide culturally responsive instruction to African American students is like to improve student learning ability (Darling-Hammond, 2004). New teachers must meet a vigorous undergraduate program to become certified they continue to graduate enable to effectively teach African American students. Many exit program with a misconception of black students. They think that the African American students are not as smart as other races. The purpose of this study is to prove there is a misrepresentation of African American students in special education. I also plan to illustrate the problem of disproportionate representation of African American students in special education is not just a special education problem issue or concern but, instead, must be viewed in the context as it refers to racism in the whole educational system. I will discuss how racism contributes to and maintains disproportionality in special education by (a) insufficiently funding schools attended primarily by African American and poor children: (b) employing culturally inappropriate and unresponsive curriculum; (c) inadequately preparing educators to effectively teach African American learners and other students of color. I will show that to effectively address the problem of disproportionality, researchers, practitioners andà policymakers must place inequitable educational resource allocation, inappropriate curriculum and pedagogy and inadequate teacher preparation at the center of education research, policy, and practice. Significance of the Study There is much significance for this study. Being a special education teacher I have seen many students come to me because they were a behavioral problem during their elementary years. I believe it is our responsibility to find a solution to this growing problem. First, we as educators, we need to find out if this race of students are get misplaced in the educational system. These students not getting a proper education are causing a negative effect on their entire life. This causes this particular group to have to depend on state aid and weakens the workforce. Secondly, we need to find out if there is a problem with teacher preparedness. If this is a problem we need to figure out what can be done in state colleges and universities to solve these problems. Would adding a more ethically diverse curriculum better prepare teachers to educate African American students? The majority of the teachers coming out of college will be spending there first few years teaching intercity kids, with the majority being African Americans. Finally we need to educate or children to be reliable productive citizens. I feel that these children are not being given an equal shot at being productive if they are being thrown in the special education class in the back of the building. We already know there is a problem, now we need to work together to find a solution that will best benefit the students. Definition of Terms Disproportionate numbers: Having greater representation within a subgroupà compared to the number of students in the population as a whole. Some researchers use plus or minus 10% to determine proportionality (Harry Anderson, 1994). Discrimination The ability to make or perceive distinction; discernment. Partiality, or bias, in the treatment of a person or group, which is unfair, illegal, etc(Loren Orfield, 2002). It is my opinion that African American children are being placed in special Education because of biases unfair grouping. High Achieving: School-wide trajectory of API (if in California) and Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) growth over three years of all subgroups. There must also be a minimum movement of two deciles within 3-5 years. ] Special Education: Services and supports designed to minimize the impact of disability and maximize opportunity to grow and learn (Hehir, 2007). Limitation, Delimitation and Assumptions Limitations of Study The limitations of this study would be to find willing participates, because of the reasons I have discussed earlier parents will be willing to admit that their child was placed in special education because of a lack of knowledge on their part. Another limitation that will affect them outcome of this research is because I am directly employed in the parish that I have chosen to do research. This position will limit the effectiveness of my research because of student privacy and my position in the parish. It is also my opinion that school districts will not want to release information that could possible be used against them. As stated before I think students of color or being illegal classified as students with special needs and placed in special education. These are a few factors that could limit my study. Delimitations of the Studyà External validity may be effected based on the number of student/parents being interviewed. Validate may be effected due to other minority races not being included in the study. Also the size and school locations may limit my ability to get adequate data to fully prove my hypothesis. The small sample population was feasible for my research rather then venturing out into larger areas. This is significant in that the findings may not be applicable to other schools. The Future of Genetic Engineering Essay -- Expository Essays Research
Any time in this modern era where one talks about the science of genetics, it is nearly impossible to think about the moral implications and ethical decisions that the future possesses. Currently, there arenââ¬â¢t many laws that govern this field of science, and one must wonder what will happen and how genetics will be governed. Two articles that I have recently read gave me a better insight on what to expect. In one article, the author, Deborah Gridley, discusses the heated topic of genetic discrimination. Genetic discrimination is defined as ââ¬Å"discrimination against an individual or against members of that individualââ¬â¢s family because of real or perceived differences from the ââ¬Ënormal genomeâ⬠(Gridley 973). Influence of the Enlightenment
The ââ¬Å"Century of Light,â⬠otherwise known as the Enlightenment brought forth a strong emphasis on Reason and Knowledge. One product of the Enlightenment is the ideas and thoughts of Condorcet. Condorcet's Sketch for a Historical Picture of The Progress of the Human Mind is brought on by his strong belief in the Perfectibility of Humanity. In rational order there are certain principals and laws that the cosmos works under, in rational order there is no change. But Condorcet says that change is progress, and through progress, Humanity can be improved. According to Condorcet, the perfection of Mankind is attainable and for that reason he is impelled to reach it. According to Condorcet and the beliefs of the Enlightenment, Reason, is innate in everyone. It is just a matter of using Education to bring it out to consciousness. Condorcet firmly believes that with proper education, a man can ââ¬Å"judge his own and other men's actions according to his own lightsâ⬠. (The Tenth Stage, Pg. 182) With reason, a man will also be able to recognize his rights and the power he has with them. He wants that a man will ââ¬Å"not be in a state of blind dependenceâ⬠(The Tenth Stage, Pg. 182). But one must keep in mind that it is not the goal of education to create a smart-aleck so to speak, but a human being that is capable of Autonomy. And even then, not Autonomy of thought but rather Autonomy of Judgment: ââ¬Å"How one should actâ⬠. When a man reaches this state, he is enlightened. He is then a responsible and respectable citizen of society and thus, perfect. To Condorcet, it is simply a matter of proper education that is necessary for such outcomes. Equality is another ideal that Condorcet mentions. Believing in the improvement of society, he questions the beginning of prejudices and divisions within the society, ââ¬Å"are these part of civilization itself, or are they due to the present imperfections of the social art?â⬠(The Tenth Stage, Pg. 174) Condorcet believes that we can progress beyond these imperfections and not only have equality among men, but extend this equality with, ââ¬Å"the complete annihilationâ⬠¦between the sexesâ⬠(The Tenth Stage, Pg. 193). According to Condorcet, we must reach for equality until mankind is able ââ¬Å"to understand his rights and to exercise them in accordance with his conscience and his creedâ⬠(The Tenth Stage, Pg. 174). With this equality Condorcet foresees a society in which pain and misery will not be the norm, but rather the exception to humanity. But to be enlightened is not the sole goal of Europe, for how can a perfect society be reached if so many others are still struggling to find the ââ¬Å"lightâ⬠? This is why Condorcet tells us in his publication, that it is the job of those that are enlightened to shed light to the others. Foreign countries are referred to as ââ¬Å"obstacles [impeding] this revolutionâ⬠(the Tenth Stage, Pg. 175). Therefore, the final step in reaching perfection would be to colonize and educate the ââ¬Ësavages' so that Perfection of Mankind may be finally reached. Colonization is imperative in the eyes of Condorcet, but not for any personal or financial gain. Because the Europeans have ââ¬Ëfound the light' it seems irrelevant for the other countries of the world to go through trial and error to reach this same level of enlightenment. Instead, colonization should take place and the ââ¬Ësavages' should be transformed from the ââ¬Ëconquered' into those in ââ¬Ëtutelage'. In this way, the perfection of Humanity is speeded forward towards completion.

Marketers do not use traditional marketing because it is not convenient to grab the attention of customers.Digital marketing is a part of traditional marketing but more innovative that always uses multi channels in order to promote the products or services. Traditional markets are using the ââ¬Ëreactive strategic posture toward cybermarketingââ¬â¢ to selling their product to their consumers. Reactive strategic posture toward cybermarketing means that the company is focus on their physical distribution such as shop or outlets even though the company has opened online distribution channel. Traditional styles and theirs activities are unchanged and always be mentioned. However, it is not many of companies using this way. Some of them are only focus on their physical distribution and they are not going to open a business at internet. Instance of company only selling their product through their physical distribution is Nadeja cake shop. They are only doing their business using their own physical distribution. Traditional markets are using the regional marketing to advertise their product into their target market. They are focus on smaller size of the customers and try to satisfy their need and want.Besides, they are using their physical distribution to sell their product to their customers. Hence, it is subject to limit the sources of the consumers, and smaller the market share of the product. And they need to distribute many outlets to make their product more convenient for their target customers and increase their profit. When traditional market is used Business transactions only take place at a fixed time, which is normally from 9a. m. to 5p. m. (Monday to Friday), which is the local time. One can only visit the outlets at that particular time in order to purchase the companyââ¬â¢s product. When buyers have specific needs, they will go to traditional market to look for their needs. Buyers determine the product offering and sellers determine the customer needs. Besides that, seller also offering goods that may fulfill those buyer needs. Therefore, traditional markets exist. Why traditional market is used Traditional market is used because can build long term relationship with seller or buyer and built on face-to-face interaction so that seller can learn more about potential buyers. , marketers are able to gain more trust aspect from the customers.A lot of people feel more comfortable purchasing products by visiting the physical stores as they are able to have a face-to-face-communication and eye contact with the consumers. Also, customers are able to feel, touch and see the goods before they make a purchase. Secondly, it has a higher durability. Advertising through online me dium carries lots of uncertainties as the companyââ¬â¢s website can be deleted, moved anytime and the search engine results change quite often. However, advertising through offline medium last longer as posters, billboards, flyers, banners and more bear longer than those ads on the internet.Thirdly, marketers will be able to get a faster results and response from the customers. If the advertisements are placed at the right place and the messages are address to the right customer, there will be lots of responses from the customers. However for digital markets, it takes time for any real results to happen as a marketââ¬â¢s website will not be able to get high ranking from search engine optimization for a day or a month. It might even take up to several years to get responses from the customers. How traditional market is used Traditional markets are using the regional marketing to advertise their product into their target market. They are focus on smaller size of the customers and try to satisfy their need and want. Besides, they are using their physical distribution to sell their product to their customers. Hence, it is subject to limit the sources of the consumers, and smaller the market share of the product. And they need to distribute many outlets to make their product more convenient for their target customers and increase their profit. Traditional markets are using the reactive strategic posture toward cyber marketing to selling their product to their consumers. Reactive strategic posture toward cyber marketing means that the company is focus on heir physical distribution such as shop or outlets even though the company has opened online distribution channel. Besides, traditional markets are using personal selling marketing strategy to promote their product to their customers. They are promoting face to face, persuade consumer to purchase. When digital market is used Digital market is the use of information and communications technology to present a ran ge of offerings available in a market segment so that the purchaser can compare the prices (and other attributes) of the offerings and make a purchase decision.Physical location of a market is in many cases irrelevant to buyers and sellers. Thus, digital market exists. Why digital market is used . This is because to improve economic efficiency by reducing margins between price and costs and speeding up complicated business deals. It may have high possibility to gather more customer information. Firstly, business transactions can be performed anytime and not limited to the fixed time restrictions, such as from 9a. m. to 5p. m. (Monday to Friday). Customers are allowed to purchase a product according to their time zone. For example, Amazon. com allows everyone to purchase their products without restrictions of time, which is for 365 days and 24 hours. Secondly, it helps to create a bounder less world as goods can be globally reached. For instance, an online database of properties in Gr eenland can be accessed not only from Greenland and also anywhere else such as Malaysia, Taiwan, America, Australia and more through the internet. Thirdly, marketers are able to deliver rich messages which contain texts, audios, videos, images and animationssimultaneously to a substantial amount of customers. For instance, Air Asia. com is able to persuadelarge amount of customers to purchase their passenger tickets as they are able to deliver their promotional activities, advertisements and price offer creatively and effectively to the customers. Fourthly, there is a two way communication between the marketers and customers. How digital market is used The exchange of goods and services between the marketers and customers take place through the electronic devices such as internet, ipad, iphone, laptop, phones and more.Digital markets are unconstrained by the shelf space, thus marketers are able to list out a catalogs of what the company is selling, the price they offer, promotions an d more on their own website. Advantages of Traditional Marketing Faster Results Many forms of internet marketing, such as search engine optimization and banner ads, can take several weeks before any real results start to happen. Furthermore, banner ads are reportedly becoming less effective now-a-days and can also take some time to produce sufficient outcome.Traditional marketing however, can produce much faster and more effective results with well-placed ads that are suitable to a particular audience. You can expect a stronger impact in lesser time with traditional marketing. Durability The truth is many websites are deleted, moved, or abandoned all the time and search engine results also change periodically. Advertising offline has no uncertainties in that nature in any way. You can give someone your business card and that same reference can be good 10 or 20 years later. The same bears true for flyers and posters, although handouts have a slightly lower life expectancy than busines s cards. The point is that a business is more durable offline than it is online. Trust Trust is a huge factor of any business, regardless of how it is promoted. Many people are more comfortable with buying products from offline ads than on the internet. The reason is that you get to see the people or company you are interested in buying from and get to know them a little before you actually purchase. More times than not, many online ads and websites don't provide that same trust aspect. The lingering of endless scam sites over the internet just makes that problem even worse. So most certainly, trust is more established in traditional marketing than on the internet. Disadvantages of Traditional market Timing Traditional marketing uses static text or advertising commercials to promote a product. If an ad is placed in the newspaper, it can't change until you place another advertise. For example, if you have a sale on bicycles that you put in the newspaper and then you run out of bicycle s, you may have many unhappy customers. On the other hand, on the Internet you can instantly update your page to let people know your bicycles are ââ¬Å"sold out. â⬠Costs Customer must pay for advertise in newspapers or mailers every time you run a new campaign. Adding new products or sales pages to your website doesn't create additional costs if you already have a person on your team who can update your product information. Traditional marketing companies may charge per delivery area for fliers or mailers. On the Internet, your advertise is accessible to the entire World Wide Web. CustomizationWith traditional market, it is difficult to target a specific customer. Specific market segments can be targeted, but not an individual. For example, advertising may target young women. The advertising may show young people interacting and present interesting copy about a new style of purse. On the Internet, new marketing techniques can track what a viewer has looked at and suggest simi lar products. Pricing Options Traditional marketing can present special sales and pricing. However, it is typically more difficult to offer complex bundle pricing. Most print marketing doesn't have the space to explain all the different pricing variations that may appeal to buyers. An online catalogue may present you with an offer that if customers buy four items from one category, you get a free item from another category. Advantages of Digital Marketing Sending communications to a large number of people, really quickly Theoretically, we assume that some people who see your campaign message are so impressed that they quickly forward it to their friends. These friends also like your message, and send it off to their list of contacts. For example, if you send a message to 20 people, and each person shares the same with 100 others, who share it with 100 more, your internet marketing message has potentially been viewed by 200,000 people. This can be the whole population of a small town. Cost YouTube videos, Facebook posts or Twitter tweets can be created at almost zero cost. This allows you to connect with millions of Internet users, practically for free. Does not require much work Once you create your message, whether a video, photo, post or tweet, you just need to send it out once.If your digital marketing message is good enough, it will spread like wildfire, bringing you a whole host of new customers. Has a long shelf life All messages that you send over the Internet can be viewed by people for years. Sure, there will be times when your message will be more in vogue than others. People sometimes check their email or Facebook accounts after months. Those who find your internet marketing message appealing may forward it to their friends at a later date, giving you a pleasant surprise in the future. As internet marketing messages spread far and wide, it is quite possible for you to reap rich harvests at a later date. Disadvantage of Digital Market Lack of security I nformation of trading could be taped and fallen into the hands of criminals. The security used for payment might not be able to protect the users privacy. Rapid Change The software development tools are still evolving and changing rapidly. Not all digital market users can adapt to these changes. Lack of trust and user resistance Buyers do not trust an unknown faceless seller, paperless transactions, and electronic money.Lack of product contact Lack of touch and feel online. Some buyers like to touch items. Conclusion In conclusion, digital market same important with traditional market and each market have its benefits to society, but also companies. Users can access to digital market from anywhere via network connection, the physical location of digital market is not important to sellers and buyers. Besides, digital market has uniform way of searching and providing information of products and services. Traditional market is more complicated to search product. For my opinion, I had st udy how important is the two markers toward the company. The digital markets and traditional markets are very important to the companies. This is because, it can help the companies selling their products to their final customers to achieve their company goals. Although both markets have difference, they are helping the companies selling their product to their target markets and gain user. By using these two ways effectively, they can bring the company to the greater height and gaining more profit.

The opening of Indians economy in the sass had allowed companies in the US and Europe, as well as Japan, to discontinue activities in-house that were not cost-effective nor considered part of an organizations core competency, and import them from elsewhere. Outsourcing To outsource work meant that a company would buy work that was previously done in-house (I. E. Within the company itself). The outsourced work could be done either offshore or elsewhere within the customers home country. Offspring Offspring meant moving work from the companys home country to another country. However, it did no t necessarily involve a third-party. Often, a satellite branch of a company was set up in another country, and the offshore work was done there. Such work was not considered outsourced, because it was still performed under the umbrella of the parent company. Offshore satellites of a single company were called captive centers, or Just captives. Since Wiper Technologies work focused on non- Indian companies based outside of India, its customers were both outsourcing and offspring the work given to Wiper. Wipers Work Back in 2003, NSA Ball and his team in the Manufacturing Vertical took note of the current state of Wipers role in global business. Enterprises had grown rapidly across the globe through mergers and acquisitions, and markets grew more global as barriers disintegrated in many developing countries. At that time, most of Wipers outsourcing work came in two forms: dedicated offshore development centers on its Bangor campus, and in the fulfillment of customers large, enterprise-wide IT projects. Odds Offshore development centers were created for customer-companies who outsourced entire business divisions to Wiper. The DOC was essentially a remote office of the client, though operated by Wiper employees. The initial objective of customers who set up Odds with Wiper was to leverage the lower costs in India. The projects undertaken in Odds varied in size, nature, and technology. Wiper operated about 50 Odds, staffed with anywhere from 50 to 1700 people in each. Large projects Large projects were also outsourced to Wiper for lower cost, but increasingly to leverage the skills of Wipers engineers and other resources that had developed as a result of dealing with similar-scale projects with other customers. One problem facing large multi-national corporations (Mans) was the integration of systems across their various geographic units. Because of their fragmentation, they were not well equipped to handle enterprise-wide system development or changes, so such large rejects, usually for integrating alien systems. Another technological problem for large corporations was procuring and providing middleware between legacy and the new packaged systems they had installed. In general, Wipers large global clients had several business units dispersed around the world, each with projects outsourced haphazardly, some to Wiper, others to local IT services companies, and some to their own internal IT departments. Within that company, the outsourced projects were addressed as follows: each business unit determined the projects it needed to outsource, and selected vendors independently. Solutions were then architect disparately, creating dissonance between units of the company. Usually, only large-scale projects went to a company like Wiper, for it was only those projects that could Justify the overhead cost associated with setting up an offshore engagement, at least from the point of view of the local managers. 1 See statistic: Mascot. Org/newswire/issue [Research. SP 2 The Problem of Small Projects Traditionally, in manufacturing, global companies tended to outsource very large software projects, but keep the many smaller projects those with budgets under $100,000 within their regional IT units. This meant that small projects were handled in one of two ways: kept in-house and completed by regional IT teams, or outsourced locally. When a project was kept in-house, it ran the risk of waiting in a long queue in the internal IT department, because of limited internal capacity and the inevitable backlog. When projects were outsourced to multiple service providers, the customer ended up with a myriad of different technical solutions across the globe. Large corporations with global footprints typically had vendor procurement processes at the local business unit level, and f similar projects did not look the same. More often than not, Wiper saw completely different architectures and completely different platforms created within one company for precisely the same business function. Even though many of these small projects were similar in nature, they were completed in uniform ways because local companies did not feel they could justify sending them to one large vendor such as Wiper. The costs of setting up an outsourcing contract were high, for there were many specifications to be outlined and agreed upon by both parties before the work could begin. The initial steps of evolving such a contract included specifying quality levels, product requirements, and delivery times. (See Exhibit 1). When software solutions were designed ad hoc, and were non-uniform across the company, upgrades and subsequent integration became difficult. This led to a integrated company-wide IT strategy and loss of control of regional IT functions. With such fragmentation, the company was unable to take full advantage of its scale because its systems each required individual maintenance and specialized skills. Having Wiper handle such projects could, Ball believed, lift the client out of the has of diffusion, the chaos of local decision-making, all of which had contributed to a global sub-optimal. If Wiper could streamline the initial steps of engagement, it would be simpler and more cost-effective for customers to hand off small projects, and a whole new stream of business would flow in. Wipers Challenge Although lower cost was the initial reason large companies chose to import services from offshore, Ball was convinced that labor cost arbitrage alone was not enough to keep his business booming, especially since Wiper faced major competitors in its own backyard, among them, Data Consultancy and Inflows Technologies Limited. He wanted Wiper Technologies to be the worlds top source for software services because of the quality of its product, not simply because it was a lowermost alternative. To be competitive in an industry which was itself growing explosively, Wiper had to differentiate itself based on the quality and delivery of its software products, not the price of its labor. New Opportunity Ball wanted to improve Wipers execution of small-sized projects such that the departments. By establishing blanket contracts with large clients, they could take in a stream of small projects but not have to go through the overhead of setting up a new entrant every time. Also, the development process could become much more efficient if Wiper reused some of the components that they developed for other projects, rather than re-creating them with each new project. 3 Rules of Engagement Traditional Model Typically, a Service Level Agreement (SAL) was created based on performance measures and process models agreed upon between Wiper and its client before work on a project began. Performance measures were quantified by work-in-progress and field defects (rejection index), estimated time to complete the project (gauged by not- n-time index), customer satisfaction (rated on scale of 1-5), effort overrun (overage and underage), and production support (response time, resolution time). The SAL also specified the process model to be used. There were various life cycle models that each project could follow, and this depended on the type of project. Development projects, maintenance projects, system conversion projects, and package implementations each had process models specific to the nature of the work. Factory Model Ball realized that companies were reinventing the wheel every time they sent their mall projects to a mà ©Lange of disparate local outsourcers, or completed the projects consolidate the initial steps of engagement and offer a more streamlined process for completion of small-scale projects to its large customers, those customers would benefit from greater strategic control. All projects under $KICK, for example, would automatically be diverted to Wiper. This would ensure uniformity across geographic units of a NC and reduce the amount of individual maintenance the company would have to do on its systems. Ball piloted this design under the name Factory Model, in which the parallel recesses of the traditional model were combined into a single stream. Each incoming project was then assigned to a process rather then creating processes around the requirements of individual projects. (See Exhibit 2). Four fundamental processes demand management, centralized engineering and architecture, core factory processes, and infrastructure consolidation served each of the individual projects requiring similar technical or functional solutions. Demand Management This phase consisted of consolidating demand for solutions across geographic regions and business units of large global customers. Wiper employed a central team to manage customer requirements and form a common, transparent demand repository within its Manufacturing vertical. Thus all work of a similar nature and of similar functional areas was funneled into this common demand management function. This led to improved pipeline management, which standardized the bid process, and reduced bid process cycle time by 10-15%. This essentially automated the demand management process. The procurement function changed in that duplication was eliminated across geographies. A web page allowed customers to log requirements for their specific rejects, and this information was stored in the demand repository as well. The entire procurement cycle was cut down by making sure assembling demand and allocating it to functional areas, then moving the requirements to the virtual factory. This was the first area of improved efficiency under the Factory Model. Centralized Architecture and Engineering Services Ball established a core architecture group that identified best processes, improvements, and innovations, and used this information to create templates for possible projects. The use of these templates enforced standards throughout the 4 roof, making it easier to train employees and assign qualified people to any project in the pipeline. This also enabled reuse of components. The centralized architecture and engineering services group endeavored to standardize the finished architecture across various business units and geographies as long as they were in the same functional area. Core Factory Processes This step incorporated specialization of tasks, knowledge reuse, and code-reuse using standards into the design, build, test, and deploy steps that actually brought projects to fruition. Within the Core Factory Processes tag were the PAPAS/PM (Product Process Quality Assurance/ProJect Management Office) features that drew upon elements of the Toyota Production System. Here projects underwent planning and control, metrics analysis, benchmarking, issue resolution, status reporting, and resource forecasting to ensure quality across the different units. Productivity improvements were driven by the use of component libraries, global test beds, and a knowledge management network. Choosing Projects Infrastructure Consolidation This step comprised the standardization of development, testing, and deployment platforms. Common platforms promoted common hardware infrastructure. Software licenses were reused where possible, and infrastructure support teams were optimized. Through a centralized capacity planning model as well as cost allocation mechanisms, this step reduced Wipers operating expenditures by about 15-20%. The Factory Model was best suited for global enterprises that sought to achieve business units. By 2004, Wiper was piloting lean processes in the Factory Model for software development for two large clients. These customers fit the profile of being global, with multiple business units spread across different geographical locations. Furthermore, the projects these customers wanted were small and not interdependent, with a low degree of variability; they were conducive to the Factory Model. Indeed, large global companies were more likely to have repeatable Jobs in their work streams projects that may be small or relatively simple in nature but large in volume. Project requirements coming in from dispersed business units often shared common components, even if they addressed different business issues. Automobile production was analogous in that individual cars on a production line shared a similar design and basic components, but also had features that made each unique. Each of the cars had four wheels, an engine, and a steering wheel, but each also had unique features like sunroof or no sunroof, automatic or standard transmission, heated seats or no heated seats, etcetera. The cars could still move down the assembly line as such, having both common components and unique features. If they were too different, there would be no point in having an assembly line; they would all be custom-made. Ball envisioned a similar scenario with software, and believed that the common components shared by many software products would allow software to be produced a factory-like style. For example, an order management system in Asia was similar to an order management system in the US, in that they both shared common functionality. Like the sunroofs or heated seats, additional features could be added or removed from the basic model according to customer specifications. Once Wiper had built the basic platform, it could very quickly turn around requests for a customized variation on that. 5 Lean Principles ongoing improvement within Wipers software development life cycle as a result of the application of lean manufacturing principles. Lean principles had already improved quality and productivity in many industries, most notably the auto industry with the Toyota Production System. In its own application of lean principles, Wiper outlined the following tenets: 1) Continuous Improvement Go see for yourself to understand thoroughly (genetic sunburst) Make decisions slowly by consensus, thoroughly considering all options, implement rapidly Continuous organizational learning through kamikaze 2) Approach to People: Respect, Challenge, and Grow Grow leaders who live the philosophy Respect, develop, and challenge your people and teams Respect, challenge, and help your suppliers

Analyze both stories. Is the author's suggestions a good solution to Essay
Analyze both stories. Is the author's suggestions a good solution to solving a problem - Essay Example On the other hand, the Houyhnhnms see themselves as superior to the Yahoos because they are more rational, thus giving the former the right to have power over the latterââ¬â¢s life and death (Lemke, Martin, Fuentes, and Swift 47). Justifying Infanticide depicts how Singer sees himself as a rational Houyhnhnm who should have a power to decide over the life and death of those considered non-humans, or those who are not yet humans. However, Swiftââ¬â¢s aim is to make people realize that humans are indeed Yahoos with pure genetic composition and the propensity towards sensual pleasures, but are also Houyhnhnms with rational thinking and the propensity towards oversimplifications and ideas. In Justifying Infanticide, Singer separated these two --- intelligence and incarnation --- by referring to newborns not as persons, but merely pain-receptors having no psychological association to its future personhood (33). Therefore, if one follows this line of reasoning, newborns are Yahoos wh ose life and death are under the decision of the superior Houyhnhnms. A Modest Proposal is entirely different since it is a satirical exaggeration that states selling the children as food to rich people may alleviate the poor parentsââ¬â¢ economic situation (Swift 13). Justifying Infanticide Justifying Infanticide has a utilitarian root that reinforces the concept of ââ¬Å"doing the greatest good for the greatest number.â⬠It says that a deed is made moral if the end justifies the means. In line with this thought, Singer theorizes that eliminating a certain percentage of the population is acceptable if justified by the situation or the result it offers (34-5). According to the utilitarian point of view, objections from people who perceive that killing a person is morally incorrect are mostly based on emotions. Utilitarianism asserts the belief that reason should be the main basis of ethics, so it means that infanticide can be justified by reason in some cases, thus be deeme d ethical (Sloane 47-8). For a clearer definition of terms, infanticide is the intentional killing of an infant for reasons ranging from partiality to a specific gender to control of population (Vehmas 38). Utilitarian Peter Singer provides the most controversial defense of infanticide. For example, Singer states that the costs to families and societies and the quality of life in caring for children with specific disabilities entail more effort but provides less positive results (35). This may be a controversial stance, but on a realistic viewpoint, the child will live a life that is considered unhappy or unwanted by most people. This is one case where infanticide is considered humane (Sloane 48). One great difficulty, however, is in deciding when this is justifiable because there is always the argument that no one can really say when a certain life is undesirable other than that very person. However, one strong defense of infanticide in the utilitarian standpoint is the argument ag ainst the suffering infant whose medical case is beyond the scientific capacity to cure (Vehmas 39). For Singer, it is more altruistic to allow parents to choose to end their and their childââ¬â¢s suffering through euthanasia (36). A Modest Proposal The lack of compassion towards the poverty-stricken citizens is the target of Swiftââ¬â¢
